After some discussion and meetings (see background) a few members of HiCAN got together to organise an event to gauge the level of local interest in starting a Transition initiative in Highgate.
On February 16th, around 50 people gathered for a public meeting at Highgate School‘s Mill Centre on Bishopswood. We watched a few shorts films (see below) then Alexis Rowell gave an introductory talk about Transition before introducing members of Kentish Town, Tufnell Park and Crouch End Transition groups who shared what they’ve been up to in their areas.
After a break (including Alexis’ delicious wild foraged pesto, local cider made by Transition Kentish Town and awesome wild food cocktails from Urban Harvest) we heard from representives of local groups in Highgate about what related projects they’re already doing, before breaking into smaller groups to discuss what other projects we’d like to see.
At the end of the meeting we asked the room to vote on whether or not we should initiate Transition Highgate. The result was a resounding YES!
Overall the event was a great success! If you’d like to watch the excellent short films we screen on the night, they are embeded below…

Leonardo Dicaprio’s film is truly scary – not in the usual horror film way, but because it truly captures the devastation already being wreaked on our world. Leonardo sets the scene with the allegory of Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, where mankind is originally innocent, then enjoys earthly delights and then suffers in a […]

Whilst the UK slips away from the EU efforts to protect the planet, the world continues to turn and global warming continues to go up and up, wreaking the devastation predicted. The EU has been co-ordinating pledges across the 28 members, providing grants, loans, shared research and common standards. Now the UK (and/or England, Scotland, […]
In all the hype and overload of ‘facts’ about the EU there seems little coverage of Climate Change and Air Pollution. Detailed lists of some of the activities and effects of EU legislation eg on Air Pollution are covered at WHAT ARE WE DOING – What is the EU Doing?. For those who believe that […]

Many powers are ‘soft’ ones such as ‘influence’ and ‘promotion’, but they also include the power of £11.5bn expenditure (p21 of […]
